Melbourne in 1925 (2025)

1925 is a new addition to our Melbourne History Resources. Patrick Gigacz delved into the Melbourne of a hundred years ago, exploring a range of themes including complaints (blasting, cattle, the ‘Flusher’), horse troughs, lamps and lighting, the traffic puzzle, the visit of the American Fleet, and the Town Hall fire.

You can see the 1925 project here.

This project was also an exercise in exploring and explaining how to use the Subject Index to the City of Melbourne’s Town Clerk’s Correspondence Files held in the Public Record Office Victoria (PROV, VPRS 3183).

It was also an opportunity to play around with image annotations use the Glycerine Image Annotation Workbench.

This project was funded by a Hansen Little Public Humanities Grant, generously supported by the Hansen Trust and administered by the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne. It was produced by the Melbourne History Workshop, with concept by Patrick Gigacz and technical development by Dr Mitchell Harrop. The Melbourne History Workshop is led by Professor Andrew J. May.
