Australia’s Friendly History


Before governments stepped in to provide welfare, friendly societies provided vital financial and social support to many Australian communities. The Australian Natives Association, Manchester Unity, the Grand United Order of Oddfellows, the Ancient Order of Foresters — these odd-sounding organisations were established on principles of thrift and self-help, and are the subject of PhD candidate Roland Wettenhall’s current thesis.
