Vale Mirka Mora

We mourn the passing in August of Mirka Mora (1928-2018), Melbourne artist extraordinaire. In 1998 Mirka wrote to me about the Encyclopedia of Melbourne project, with some reminiscences of her own “lost landmark”:

I miss my old studio at 9 Collins Street, Grosvenor Chambers, Melbourne, where we lived for fifteen years: the Paris end of Collins St. It had been the studio of Tom Roberts, A. Streeton, Sir John Longstaff, McCubbin, Ola Cohn and many others.

When the Mora family came to have the studio — 1952. Many parties were had that led to the revival of the contemporary art society, in the studio, and later, to the birth of the Museum of Modern Art at Heide, with John and Sunday Reed and my husband Georges Mora working hard to achieve their aim: MOMA.

P.S. I also love the end of the concourse of Flinders Street Station where my mosaic mural is.
