The Value of History

The Melbourne History Workshop is pleased to endorse The Value of History Statement adopted by the History Councils of Victoria, NSW, South Australia and Western Australia and being presented today at the Australian Historical Association conference in Toowoomba. The Statement recognises that the study of the past and the telling of its stories are critical to our sense of belonging, to our communities and to our shared future.

History is essential in:

  • shaping our identities,
  • engaging us as citizens,
  • creating inclusive communities,
  • contributing to our economic well-being,
  • teaching us to think critically and creatively,
  • inspiring our leaders, and
  • providing a foundation for future generations.

In particular, the Statement acknowledges the vital importance of Indigenous knowledge, family stories, oral histories, social customs, cultural collections, heritage and civic commemorations in strengthening our connections and commitment to one another.
