Block XI (2016)

This ongoing project explores the incorporation of GIS and geospatial technology, involving the conversion of scanned printed materials into geo-referenced raster datasets which will be further enhanced with other historical datasets and interpretive materials to construct a uniquely layered gateway to the city’s history. This rich-map approach will be the basis for new ways of engaging with urban history in the digital realm, analysis of historical change over time, and interdisciplinary approaches to the urban past. The focus city block is bounded by Swanston, Collins, Russell and Bourke Streets. This project is a collaboration with the City of Melbourne, with support from a University of Melbourne Faculty Research Grant.
