To assist the City of Melbourne in its Laneways Public Art Commission program, Professor May, Dr Cate O’Neill and a group of students (Edwina Byrne, Biheng Zhang, Alexandra Gerner and Patricia McMullin) identified over 300 lanes that have existed in Melbourne at one time or other. Many of these have undergone name changes, or have joined with other lanes to become arcades. Many others have been built over or demolished. Lane entries were researched and included in the eMelbourne online database. The Laneway Commissions were born out of the City’s Public Art Program and seek to capture collective and individual urban consciousness using Melbourne’s unique laneway topography as a canvas. The project also had assistance from Ailie Smith and Helen Morgan (eScholarship Research Centre).
