Crutchey, Tabby-cats, Spud, Little Charlie, Curley, and all their mates! This exhibition curated by Professor May celebrated the history of a city icon, inviting modern-day Melburnians to contribute their memories of the heyday of the city newsboy and his ways. Read all about it! Melbourne’s newsboys ran at the City Gallery from Thursday 5 May to Sunday 20 June 2005. It drew on literary, newspaper and pictorial sources, and showcased documents from the City of Melbourne’s archives. The exhibition captured the experiences and representations of Melbourne’s newsboys, the societies and clubs formed to foster their well-being and promote their interests, and the regulatory framework of juvenile labour in the city.
