In 2026 Roly Wettenhall assisted the University of Melbourne Advancement office by researching the impact of philanthropy provided to the University by Sidney Myer and his descendents.
In 1926, Sidney Myer made a gift to the University of 25,000 shares in Myer Emporium Ltd. The gift of shares rather than cash or goods in kind was unique; Myer sought to distribute his financial success outside that of his family by providing dividends into the future as his business grew.
Roly’s research not only highlighted that financial benefits that flowed to the University but that the example set by Sidney Myer one hundred years ago has created a philanthropic legacy that still continues; the beneficiaries of his legacy are creating their own legacies that benefit the nation, his example has inspired other families to follow his example of extraordinary generosity, and the subsequent generations of the Myer family place philanthropy at the forefront of their interactions with humanity.
This research will be reflected in a publication, a celebratory event display and a website entry.
